Winter Protection Today for a Greener Spring

So far, this winter has brought the typical mix of snow, ice, and cold temperatures across Central Virginia. While weather has occasionally adjusted our schedule, our Virginia Green Service Leaders have continued winter applications whenever conditions allow, preparing lawns for the transition into spring. As daylight increases, fescue lawns will soon begin to regain their rich green color.

Snowfall is often beneficial for lawns. It acts as a protective blanket, shielding turf from harsh winds that can cause winter desiccation, and as it melts, it provides helpful moisture. This is a great time to sign up for our Tree and Shrub services, our winter applications include nutrients that support recovery from normal winter injury, helping turf grow out of any browned leaf tissue once temperatures rise and mowing resumes. Learn more in our blog, "Winter Lawn Care Tips in Virginia."

Ice melt products, however, can cause salt injury along driveways and sidewalks if overapplied. Using products containing magnesium chloride or calcium chloride and avoiding excessive use can help reduce damage. If injury occurs, heavy watering can help flush salts from the soil, and our fertilizer applications can assist with recovery. In severe cases, reseeding may be needed.

We are also continuing to apply lime and potassium to strengthen root systems ahead of spring. And remember, February 27th is the final day to receive 5% off your 2026 services with our prepay discount through your Virginia Green portal or by calling 804 285 6200.

Thank you for trusting Virginia Green to care for your lawn and landscape. We look forward to the season ahead.
